Basically, once you age and reach your senior years, your brain starts to lose power. Like the rest of the body, the brain slows its function as it grows older. An older brain has a harder time reproducing brain cells than a younger brain, and the effects of which are sad. Many generalizations about seniors are due to brain aging. The reason seniors are considered weaker is because of this.
One of the many side effects of brain aging is memory loss. If your grandparents sometimes forget your name or mix it up with your brothers’ or sisters’ or cousins’, this is the reason. As people grow older, brain cells are reproduced at a slower pace. This means the brain is no longer as sharp as it used to be. Older brains need more time to process thoughts.
Another side effect of an aging brain is degradation or loss of motor skills. One very noticeable thing about seniors is that they are relatively slower than people in their prime. This is because the motor skills become less sharp as one ages. Moreover, joint complications in older people make it even more difficult for them to move.
One last example of the effects of an aging brain is failing of the senses. If you compare an older person to a more youthful individual, you would notice that the latter’s senses are keener. This is again because of brain aging. The brain needs more time to process things and thus, older people’s senses are sometimes askew. The most common sense problems of seniors are failing eyesight and difficulty in hearing.
In order to avoid a failing brain when aging, one should exercise the brain. Since you can’t really physically exercise your brain, the best thing to do is just learn new things. Learning keeps the brain sharp. The best brain exercises you can do are reading, watching the news, stretching and exercising.
